posterdashboard

login to algorithmicdesign.net

login00scroll down and under “Meta” there should be a login button; click on it
login01At the login page were you input your username and password. I have emailed you your usernames. I’ll be using alexis’ username for the example
login02Once you click on log in you should find yourself at the dashboard; Ready to start posting! We’re going to be using the “Posts” option of your dashboard for now, and the “Pages” a bit later.

adding a new post

addpost00From your dashboard click on add new post. Give it a title and start writing your text.
addpost01You can edit your text in either Visual or HTML mode. I would strongly encourage html if you feel confident enough with simple html tags. Otherwise visual will be good enough for most cases. At this point, before you publish your new post, if you click on adding an image, you’ll get the following error:
addpost02This is because of role restrictions from the administrator. The post you are currently editing is not “yours” up until it gets published and even though you can add images to your own post, you can’t add to anyone else’s. Don’t worry, in a few minutes once you publish your post for the first time, you’ll automatically get the privilege to add images to it!
addpost03One more thing before you hit the publish button: let’s click on the appropriate category for our post. You can also add a category if it doesn’t exist yet.
addpost04Make sure your title makes “sense”. The first time you publish your post it automatically gets it’s URL (web address). I would think you want your post at a URL like “http://blog.algorithmicdesign.net/2009/02/nice-render/”, instead of “http://blog.algorithmicdesign.net/2009/02/i-didn’t-really-know-what-to-put-there/” and even if you can change it later, it’s a bit more difficult. Now click publish.
addpost05Nice work, the blog says your post is published! It’s not yet done though, so don’t spend time on reviewing yet, we’ll do that in a second.
addpost06Let’s add an image. Click on the “addimage” button on the top of the text editor.
addpost07Now that you have already published your post, you should have full privileges to upload media to it. Click on “From Computer” and then on “Select Files”.
addpost08Browse for your file. click on select.
addpost09Uploading should go really fast. If it doesn’t you probably chose a huge file (which you shouldn’t). Wait half a second, it should say “Crunching” and then prompt you with the next screen.
addpost10Add a title to your image. Make sure you click on medium (because posts can only contain medium images aka 450 pixels wide; pages on the other hand can contain images up to 950 pixels wide). Then click on “insert into post”.
addpost11Now the image should appear in the editor.
addpost12Scroll up/down the editor, edit your text and repeat the last few steps as many times as needed till you get your post looking great! Then click on the “update post” button.
addpost13Now the blog should say “Post saved”. This time it doesn’t give you the direct link to view the post, but we want to review it so let’s type the address on your explorer.
addpost14type http://blog.algorithmicdesign.net and hit enter. Your post is there and it looks great! Let’s click on the title of the post to see the whole thing (long posts get truncated) and its comments.
addpost15On the left the blog should give you the option of re-editing your post (if you’re still logged in). I don’t like the text so I’ll click to change it.
addpost16Conveniently it takes you directly at the post editor. Here you can keep editing it and click on “update post” to publish your changes.
addpost17if you want to access your earlier posts to edit them from your dashboard, hover over their title and it should show you more options (Edit-Delete-View)

editing your own page

editpage00Go to Pages. Hover over the title of the page you want to edit and click on Edit.
editpage01Here you can start adding text, change your title etc. Let’s add an image. Click on the add an image button.
editpage02Say you want to add an image you have already uploaded to the blog (if you want to add a new one scroll up in the tutorial I explain how to upload images to posts; the only difference here is that you can insert images to the post 950 pixels wide). If you click on media library you should be able to see your previously uploaded images. Click on “show” for more options.
editpage03Click on insert image. Remember that here you can use Large instead of medium (but you don’t have to)
editpage04Keep adding text and images till you like your content and then click on “update page”
editpage05The blog should say “Page Updated”. Let’s go back to the blog to review it.
editpage06My page (well alexis’s) is under meta-stratum. You should probably know where yours is.
editpage07Click on your name (or your page’s name).
editpage08Here is how it looks like. I messed up the text so I’ll click on “edit this entry” to fix it.
editpage09That takes me directly back to the editor. You should keep reviewing your page till it looks great! good luck and please mail me if you have any problems
